Also known as sweet pepper, the thick fleshed sweet mild tasting fruits are produced on 80cm high plants and are used for salads and other culinary purposes at the deep green colour stage or the bright crimson of mature fruits.
A warmth loving plant related to the tomato they will not stand frosts or prolonged cold weather so sowing times are important. To obtain early crops, seed must be raised in a hot bed or warm position indoors and when seedlings are large enough to handle, they should be pricked off into individual pots to develop a strong root system. Gradually harden off and plant out in warm weather.
They require a rich deep well drained soil to which has been added a complete fertilizer before planting.
Protect shallow root system from sun by mulching with compost.
